With David Barrett’s One Shining Moment filling the air and Bill Self and the Kansas Jayhawks winning their 4th National Championship trophy, it’s hard not to feel heartbreak in that, once again, your team finished the season—and a crazy tournament— with a loss (unless you’re a joyful Jayhawks fan), and that last night was the last college basketball game for seven months.
Fortunately, as melancholy fills the Hoop-a-Nator war room, Evolytics is proud to announce we turned our starting balance of $1,280 into a $2,054.83 donation to support the American Lung Association’s meaningful work. Our expertise in advanced analytics, machine learning, and years of historical data led to the development of the Hoop-a-Nator, which we hope aided in choosing enough winning picks to contribute toward a working for a world free of lung disease.

2022 Hoop-a-nator Game Changer
For the 2022 NCAA tournament the Evolytics team used our custom built, Predictive Analytics application—Hoop-a-nator—to enter bracket contests and bet on the NCAA tournament games in Las Vegas. We’re so confident in it’s predictions (or maybe we were just crazy) that start out by putting up $1,000 of our own cash (plus what others add) to bet on the games, with proceeds going to a deserving organization that directly touches more than 20 million Americans each year and supports millions of Americans with a pioneering model of education, advocacy, and research, the American Lung Association.

NATIONAL CHAMPION GAME PICK
It’s championship day! We went 1-1 over the weekend, hitting on the North Carolina game, and what a game. Villanova didn’t look the same without Justin Moore and KU ended up beating them handily. We should have a high scoring affair tonight in what looks to be a great matchup. Our model favors KU by 4.75 points, so we will take the favorite and laying down $200 to ensure we can donate at least $2,000 to the American Lung Association.

FINAL FOUR PICKS
It’s Final Four weekend and the slate is packed with blue blood programs. Even after going 1-3 in the Elite Eight, the Hoop-a-Nator is still up nearly $1,000 and sits with a 60% winning percentage. Our model still favors the underdogs this weekend but be cautious as it doesn’t account for injuries (Villanova’s Justin Moore). We are betting conservatively in the Final Four to ensure we can donate at least $1,600 to the American Lung Association.

ELITE EIGHT PICKS
The tournament trend of underdogs prevailing corrected itself in the Elite Eight with 3 out of 4 favorites covering the spread. Anticipating this possibility, we only bet 33% of our bankroll on the round since the Hoop-a-Nator predicted all underdogs. We spread $810 evenly across the four Elite Eight games and came out down $428 for the round. Fortunately, we’re still up more than $1000 for the tournament and sit with a 36-23-1 record. PERFECTION! Not only is March Madness the most perfect time of the year, but our model was a perfect 8-0 in the Sweet Sixteen matchups. We pushed our total winnings up to $1,413, and with the four Elite Eight matchups we look to continue the success with another four of our best bets. The Hoop-A-Nator model predicts a tie between Villanova and Houston, so watch for an exciting game there, and the trend of picking the underdog continues with all four bets going against the favorite.

The 2022 Sweet 16 starts today and we’re ready with some tasty picks! So far in the tournament, underdogs are covering the spread 46% of the time, and the Hoop-a-Nator’s third-round picks continue this trend. The only two favorites we predict will cover the spread this round are Miami, Fla. and Villanova. Our model also thinks Houston will beat Arizona outright, and Duke will beat Texas Tech. We bet $998 this round, so stay tuned to see if our donation pool of winnings for the American Lung Association keeps growing!

The Hoop-a-nator had a great second round, going 11-5 with a net profit of $375! Our model favors the underdogs, so we heavily weighted our bets on the four games where it handily predicted the favorites to win (Providence, Villanova, Wisconsin, Purdue)—and it paid off. We’re finding the model’s sweet spot and it’s now 16-4 where the difference between our spread and Vegas’ is between 2-6 points.
